Robert L. White (1927 – December 10, 2023) was a notable American professor of electrical engineering and a pioneer in cochlear implants. Initially an expert in magnetics at Stanford University, he transitioned to cochlear implant research in 1964. Alongside surgeon Blair Simmons, White developed an early six-electrode device implanted directly into the auditory nerve. This innovative work paved the way for further advancements in multi-channel implants, which he continued to refine in collaboration with Simmons and test on human subjects.
