Julius Robert Oppenheimer (22 April 1904 – 18 February 1967) was an American theoretical physicist of Jewish descent and a professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley. He is often referred to as the 'father of the atomic bomb' for his role in organizing the Manhattan Project, the research and development endeavor that created the first nuclear weapons. The first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16, 1945, in New Mexico; Oppenheimer later recalled thinking of words from the Bhagavad Gita: 'Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.'
