Robert Otto Pohl is a German-American solid-state physicist born on December 17, 1929, in Göttingen. He studied at the Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg and the University of Erlangen, earning his diploma in 1955 and his doctorate in 1957. Pohl became a professor at Cornell University and has held various visiting professorships in Germany and New Zealand. His research focuses on heat transport in solid materials, glass structure, nuclear waste disposal, and low-temperature techniques. He received the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize in 1985 and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
