Robert-Ralph Carmichael (1937 – July 16, 2016) was a Canadian artist best known for designing the common loon image on the reverse side of the Canadian one-dollar coin, affectionately called the 'loonie'. His design features a loon swimming in a lake, with trees on the horizon. Carmichael’s initials, RRC, are noted on the coin. Residing in Echo Bay, Ontario, he was honored with a monument known as the 'Big Loonie' in 1992. His artwork is included in various collections across Ontario and Alberta.
