Robert Lee Rayford (1953-1969) was an American teenager from Missouri, suggested to be the earliest confirmed HIV/AIDS case in North America. Evidence from 1988 indicated he was infected with a virus related to HIV-1. Rayford died from pneumonia, while his other symptoms puzzled doctors. A study published in 1988 found HIV antibodies, and in 1999, HIV genetic material testing was presented at a scientific conference, but the findings have not been published in a peer-reviewed journal.
