Robert A. Rivas is an American politician and the current Speaker of the California State Assembly. A member of the Democratic Party, he serves the 29th Assembly District in the Pajaro and Salinas valleys. Elected to the Assembly in November 2018, he previously served on the San Benito County Board of Supervisors. Rivas announced his candidacy for Speaker in May 2022 and was elected to the position on November 10, 2022, assuming office on June 30, 2023. He is part of the California Legislative Progressive Caucus.
