He joined the Royal Navy in 1917 and rose to prominence during World War II, particularly for his leadership during the Battle of the Barents Sea, which earned him the Victoria Cross. His courageous actions protected a vital convoy from a superior enemy fleet. After the war, he continued to serve, attaining the rank of rear admiral. He passed away on 13 June 1972, at the age of 71.
