Robert Stämpfli was a Swiss physiologist and membrane researcher best known for his collaboration with Sir Andrew Fielding Huxley in describing saltatory conduction in myelinated nerve fibers. He played a pivotal role in establishing the University of Saarland's physiological institute as a leading center of electrophysiology and membrane biology. Stämpfli served as a senator for the German Research Foundation and held board positions in various scientific societies. He was recognized with honorary doctorates and became an honorary senator of the University of Saarland in 1988. He is also the great-grandfather of actress Jasna Fritzi Bauer.
