Robert Harding Whittaker was an American plant ecologist from Wichita, Kansas, who was active between 1950 and 1980. He earned his degree from Topeka University and completed his doctorate at the University of Illinois after military service. Whittaker pioneered the use of radioactive markers in ecosystem studies and proposed the gradient analysis system for plant communities. He is known for classifying living beings into five kingdoms: Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, and the now-obsolete Monera. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1974 and received recognition as an eminent ecologist from the Ecological Society of America.
