Robert Wilson Simmons was an influential American surfer and surfboard shaper, known as the father of the modern surfboard. After overcoming a serious health challenge in his teens, he took up surfing at age 20 and was notable for his innovation in surfboard design by using fiberglass and polyester resin. His contributions greatly influenced the surf culture and equipment. Tragically, Simmons drowned while surfing at Windansea Beach in 1954, but his legacy in the surfing community endures.
