Notably, he discovered the function of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in regulating circadian rhythms and detailed its organizational structure. Additionally, he identified the mammalian retinohypothalamic tract (RHT) as an important pathway for photic entrainment. As of 2017, he serves as a professor of neurology at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also holds a secondary appointment in psychiatry and neuroscience, and contributes as co-director at a Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence.
