She has been the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since January 20, 2021, under the Biden administration, following Robert R. Redfield's tenure during the Trump administration. Before her CDC role, she led the Infectious Diseases Division at Massachusetts General Hospital and served as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. An expert in AIDS and HIV, she has a Bachelor’s degree from Washington University, an M.D. from Johns Hopkins, and an MPH from Harvard.
