He served as a combat pilot during World War II and the Indochina War, later becoming a test pilot after the war. Notably, he was the first French and European pilot to break the sound barrier in 1952 aboard a Mystère II. Carpentier passed away on January 9, 1959, while flying a prototype aircraft. He received several honors for his contributions to aviation.
