He obtained his doctorate in 1965 from the University of Hamburg with a thesis on nuclear reactions (specifically the stripping reaction on silicon). Felst played a significant role in the JADE collaboration at the DESY research center, where the detector operated from 1979 to 1986, contributing to the discovery of gluons in three-jet events and testing quantum chromodynamics. He served as a professor at the University of Hamburg and received the Max Born Prize in 2000.
