Romano Benet is an Italian mountaineer born on April 20, 1962. He is married to fellow climber Nives Meroi, and together they have ascended eleven eight-thousanders by 2008. Their climbing partnership began after their wedding in 1989, but they faced a significant setback on K2 in 1994. In 1998, they summited Nanga Parbat, and the following year achieved two more peaks, Shishapangma and Cho Oyu. In 2003, they climbed Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, and Broad Peak in twenty days, and he later climbed Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Annapurna.
