She gained notoriety through her marriage to Lang Hancock, a prominent iron ore mining magnate in Western Australia. After his death, she was involved in a lengthy legal dispute with his daughter Gina Rinehart regarding his estate. The legal action began in 1992 and was resolved in 2003, concluding a coronial inquiry that found Hancock's death was due to natural causes. Porteous divides her time between Perth and Melbourne.
