Rosemary Kennedy (September 13, 1918 - January 7, 2005) was the eldest daughter of Joseph Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, and the sister of President John Kennedy and Senators Robert and Ted Kennedy. She faced behavioral issues, which made her academically and athletically less capable than her siblings. At 23, her father arranged a lobotomy that failed and left her permanently disabled. Rosemary spent the rest of her life in an institution in Jefferson, Wisconsin, with limited family contact. Her condition may have inspired her sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver to start the Special Olympics in 1962.
