Rudolf Müller, born on February 22, 1931, in Berlin, is a former East German escape helper convicted for the killing of a border soldier. He initially served in the People's Police before defecting to the West. After his family's forced separation by the Berlin Wall in 1961, he dug a tunnel for their escape. During the attempt, he shot a soldier, leading to decades of legal complications culminating in a 1999 conviction for manslaughter. Müller later moved to Frankfurt and held various roles including union official and business manager while authoring several works on his experiences.
