Rudolf Rieder is an Austrian physicist, born on January 2, 1940, in Vienna. He studied physics at the University of Vienna from 1958 and received his doctorate in 1966. After his studies, Rieder worked at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, the Rudolf Sacher Society, and Technicon GmbH in Vienna. From 1986 to 1989, he contributed to the Russian Phobos mission to Mars and developed the APX spectrometer for the Pathfinder mission, which conducted the first chemical rock analyses on Mars in 1997, earning the title of Scientist of the Year in Austria that same year.
