Rufus Haynes Ritchie (1924-2017) was an American solid-state physicist known for his discovery of surface plasmons in 1957. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Kentucky and served as a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Ritchie worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and became a professor at the University of Tennessee. His research significantly contributed to radiation dosimetry and particle interactions with solids. Notably, he developed non-perturbative theories for slow ions and received multiple awards for his contributions to physics.
