He authored several books, notably 'George Bancroft: Brahmin Rebel,' which won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize. Nye was educated at Oberlin College and the University of Wisconsin, receiving his doctorate in 1940. He taught at Michigan State University for nearly four decades and co-founded the Popular Culture Association in 1970. His efforts emphasized the importance of mass culture, challenging conventional distinctions between high and low culture.
