Ruth Marie Brinker was an American AIDS activist born on May 1, 1922. She founded Project Open Hand in 1985, providing meals to home-bound AIDS patients in San Francisco. Inspired by a friend’s death due to malnutrition, she mobilized volunteers to ensure that others did not suffer the same fate. Her nonprofit grew to serve thousands of meals daily and became a model for similar organizations across the U.S. Brinker passed away on August 8, 2011, at age 89, leaving a legacy of compassion and community support for the ill.
