Ruth DeFries is an American environmentalist and geographer known for her specialization in using remote sensing to study land viability under the influence of human activities, such as deforestation. Her work has focused on how these activities impact biophysical and biogeochemical processes. DeFries received the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2007 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2006.
