Ruth-Esther Hillilä-Bickel was an American-Finnish musicologist born on February 28, 1928, in Ishpeming, Michigan. She became a significant figure in choral music, founding and leading boy choirs internationally, including Cantores Minores in Finland. She earned her master's degree in sacred music in 1951 and later a PhD in music. Hillilä was active in various musical roles and pioneered efforts in training boys' voices. In 1966, she worked in Hong Kong, establishing an international boys' choir, and published the Historical Dictionary of the Music and Musicians of Finland in 1997.
