Ruth Elizabeth Jones McClendon (1943-2017) was an influential American politician from Texas. Born in Houston, she studied at Texas Southern University and earned a master's from Webster University. She initially ran for office in 1988 but lost. McClendon served on the San Antonio City Council from 1993 to 1996 before being elected to the Texas House of Representatives, where she consistently won over 85% of the vote in subsequent elections. Her political career concluded with her resignation in January 2016, and she passed away from brain cancer in December 2017.
