Ruth M. Briggs was a significant figure in U.S. military history, born on December 7, 1910, in Hopkinton, Rhode Island. She served as a lieutenant colonel in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and was secretary to General Walter Bedell Smith. Briggs was commissioned as a second lieutenant on August 29, 1942, and was among the first five WAC officers sent to North Africa, facing peril when their ship was torpedoed. In 1966, she ran as the Republican nominee for U.S. Senator in Rhode Island but was defeated.
