Ruth Waithera Nganga, born on August 17, 1958, is a retired Kenyan sprinter known for her achievements in athletics, particularly in the 400 metres. She won bronze medals in the 200 metres at the 1978 All-Africa Games and 1979 African Championships. Waithera made history as the first African woman to reach the Olympic final in the 400 metres during the 1984 Summer Olympics. She also held the Kenyan record in the 400 metres, set in 1984. An advocate for youth sports, she founded the Avenue Sports Club to help orphans pursue athletics.
