Ryōji Noyori is a Japanese chemist born on September 3, 1938, in Kobe. He works at Nagoya University in Japan. In 1999, he received the King Faisal Prize in Science. Noyori won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with William Knowles and Barry Sharpless. Sharpless received half of the award, while Knowles and Noyori shared the other half for their development of materials that accelerated the production of pharmaceuticals. Noyori is the second Japanese chemist to win the Nobel Prize in consecutive years after Hideki Shirakawa.
