She graduated from Waseda University and began her writing career after winning an honorable mention in the 33rd Bungei Kai Newcomer Award in 1971 for 'The Riverbed of the Round Flag.' Umehara was nominated for the Akutagawa Prize four times but did not win. She received the 12th Hirabayashi Taiko Literary Prize in 1984 for 'Shikoku Mountain' and the 47th Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Art Award in 1997 for 'Marine Corridor.'
