Ryszard Syski was a Polish-American mathematician known for his contributions to queueing theory. Born on April 8, 1924, in Płock, Poland, he participated in World War II with the Armia Krajowa and after the war studied mathematics in London. He earned his B.Sc. in 1954 and Ph.D. in 1961 at the University of London. Syski spent much of his career at the University of Maryland, where he founded a journal and published over forty articles. He passed away on June 11, 2007, in Silver Spring, Maryland.
