He is often referred to as the Father of Gastroenterology in India due to his pioneering work. Notably, he discovered Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis, an idiopathic chronic liver disease, which he detailed in a 1962 paper alongside Ramalingaswami and Wig. For his groundbreaking research on liver diseases, including Hepatitis B, he was honored with the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Dr. B. C. Roy Award the same year.
