S. Pancharatnam, also known as Shivaramakrishnan Pancharatnam, was an Indian physicist born on February 9, 1934, in Kolkata. He is recognized for introducing a variant of the geometric phase in experiments with polarized light in 1956. His contributions significantly advanced the understanding of optical phenomena and their underlying geometric principles. Unfortunately, his life was cut short when he passed away on May 28, 1969, in Oxford.
