S. R. Nathan was a Singaporean politician who served as the sixth President of Singapore from September 1, 1999, to August 31, 2011, making him the longest-serving president in the country’s history. He was also the Chief of Defence Force of the Singapore Armed Forces. Nathan was elected unopposed in the presidential elections of 1999 and 2005, as no other candidates were deemed eligible.
