Sarawanabavanandan Shanmuganathan, known as Vasanthan, was a Sri Lankan Tamil militant and politician born on May 16, 1960. A senior commander in the militant People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam, he also served on the Vavuniya Urban Council. Shanmuganathan was elected to the Parliament in 1994 representing the Vanni District. He was assassinated on July 15, 1998, by a claymore mine, an act attributed to the rival Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, though some sources suggest it was an internal conflict within the PLOTE.
