Saadat Hasan Manto (11 May 1912 - 18 January 1955) was a Pakistani writer, playwright, and author, recognized as one of the greatest short story writers in South Asian history. He produced 22 collections of short stories, one novel, five series of radio plays, three collections of essays, and two collections of personal sketches. His best short stories are often praised by several writers and critics, and some of his works have been translated into various languages. Manto faced obscenity charges six times but was never convicted.
