He published his first poetry collection 'Diyaar e Shab' in 1976, which received several awards, including the Abbasin Arts Council Award. Over his career, he published 12 Urdu poetry collections and contributed to various plays and documentaries for national television and radio. Fluent in both English and Urdu, he served as a lecturer and joined the civil service, holding numerous administrative roles. Akhtar was passionate about poetry, music, and social work until his death in 2013.
