She gained international attention when she was murdered by extremists on June 7, 2007, making her the 108th journalist killed in connection with the Iraq War, which began in 2003. Her death highlighted the dangers faced by journalists, particularly in conflict zones, as 86 Iraqi journalists were among those killed while reporting on the war.
