Salah Shehade (1952-2002) was the founder of the military wing of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, initially known as the 'Palestinian Mujahideen' and later as the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, where he served as the commander. His family fled to the Gaza Strip from Jaffa following its occupation in 1948 and settled in the Beach refugee camp.
