He received his calligraphy mastery from the Turkish calligrapher Hamid Al-Amidi and studied under the Iraqi calligrapher Hashim Al-Baghdadi. Notable students include calligrapher Taha Al-Bustani and Emirati calligrapher Fatima Al-Buqali. He helped found the Iraqi Calligraphers Association in 1974, taught at Istanbul's Muhammad Al-Fatih University, and served as the former editor of Arabic Letters magazine in Dubai, as well as former chief editor of Islamic Arts magazine. He held a Bachelor's degree from Baghdad University and a PhD in Islamic Art History from Istanbul University.
