She invented the Random Early Detection (RED) active queue management scheme and contributed to several key protocols such as TCP, SACK, ENG, DCCP, and TFRC. Floyd earned her bachelor's degree in sociology in 1971, followed by a master's in computer science in 1984 and a Ph.D. in 1987, all from the University of California, Berkeley. She received the IEEE Internet Award in 2005 and the ACM SIGCOMM Award in 2007 for her significant contributions to congestion management.
