Sam Hormusji Framji Manekshaw (3 April 1914 – 27 April 2008) was an Indian Army officer who served as the Chief of the Army Staff from 1969 to 1973. He was the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. He was nicknamed "Sam Bahadur" by his troops. He was born in Amritsar, Punjab, British India, and educated at Sherwood College, Nainital. He joined the British Indian Army in 1934 and served in the Second World War. After India's independence in 1947, he served in the Indian Army and rose through the ranks. He was appointed Chief of the Army Staff in 1969 and led the Indian Army to victory in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.
