He held the presidency of Michigan State University from 2019 until November 2022, and previously served as the president of Stony Brook University from 2009 to 2019. Stanley is recognized for his contributions as one of the founding directors of the Midwest Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research. He announced his resignation from Michigan State University on October 13, 2022, officially stepping down on November 4, 2022.
