San Baw was a renowned Burmese orthopedic surgeon known for pioneering the use of ivory hip prostheses for unhealed femoral neck fractures and developing new techniques for treating pediatric tibial pseudarthrosis. He served as the chief orthopedic surgeon at Mandalay General Hospital and Rangoon General Hospital, performing over three hundred surgeries. After his death from lung cancer in 1984, his wife established the Dr. San Baw Prize for Research, and their son initiated the Dr. San Baw Research Fund to support orthopedic research and training.
