San Nishiō (西王 燦) was a Japanese poet born on December 29, 1950, and passed away on March 18, 2023. He was a former editorial board member of the tanka association magazine 'Tanka Jin'. His wife, Nanako Takeshita, is also a poet and received the Tanka Research Newcomer Award in 1983. Their daughter was a frequent contributor to Hirokazu Masuno's 'How to Write Tanka', although both San Nishiō and Nanako Takeshita have expressed doubts regarding this claim.
