Coached by her father, Jake, she became a notable player, winning the Orange Bowl (16s) in 1970 and achieving All-American honors thrice at Trinity University. Stap earned a gold medal in women's doubles at the 1975 Pan American Games. As the women's head coach at Northwestern University from 1980 to 1989, she led the team to four undefeated Big Ten seasons and notable NCAA Championship finishes in 1986 and 1987.
