Sanpei Shirato was a renowned manga artist known for his social critique and realistic art style, both in character design and backgrounds. This style is referred to as gekiga. He was the son of Japanese painter Okamoto Toki and initially aspired to become an artist like his father, starting his career as a Kamishibai artist. Shirato also contributed to the early years of the alternative manga anthology magazine Garo, established in 1964, which had a focus distinct from traditional commercial manga.
