Santiago Valderas Cañestro was a Spanish military leader, born on March 26, 1933, in Larraix, Morocco. He graduated as a lieutenant from the General Air Academy in 1957 and served as a pilot in the US Air Force. He held positions such as commander of Wing 12 and was a member of the Air Force General Staff. From 1996 to 2000, he served as Chief of Defense Staff, and was promoted to Air General in 1999. Valderas was an advocate for enhancing Spain's role in European security within NATO.
