Sarath Fonseka, born on December 18, 1950, is a former Sri Lankan politician and member of parliament, as well as a retired general and active field marshal of the Sri Lankan Army. He served as the 18th commander of the army, leading the successful end of the brutal LTTE conflict in 2009. After voluntarily resigning from the army, he contested the 2010 presidential elections against Mahinda Rajapaksa, facing defeat and imprisonment afterwards. He later supported Maithripala Sirisena and was reinstated in honors and ranks in 2015, becoming a minister.
