Saroj Lal (née Chanana) was an Indian-Scottish teacher and activist born on 23 April 1937. She moved to Scotland in the late 1960s, where she trained as a primary school teacher. Over three decades, she became a notable champion of race relations and worked with the YWCA as a community worker. Eventually, she served as the director of the Lothian Racial Equality Council and made history as the first Asian woman to become a Justice of the Peace in Scotland.
