He served as the national Ombudsman for Serbia from 2007 to 2017, resigning to run in the 2017 presidential elections, where he placed second with 16.36% of the vote. Janković is a co-founder of the Free Citizens' Movement, a center-left political organization in Serbia. He was born in Loznica, Serbia, which was part of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and was a talented handball player in his youth, also engaging in karate and recreational shooting.
